It all began with a simple idea to make the space in the Northern Health Mental Health Inpatient Unit more inviting, uplifting, and healing for everyone who walks through the doors. Thanks to the fantastic effort from one of our dedicated staff members, Sumeet Saini, Northern Mental Health Nurse, and the generosity of many, that idea is now blossoming into reality.

On Saturday, 4 January this year, Sumeet held a fundraising sausage sizzle at Bunnings Epping to raise funds for her department, bringing together staff, consumers, and the broader community. The event was more than just a chance to enjoy good food, it was a gathering filled with laughter, conversations, and the shared joy of contributing to a meaningful cause. By the end of the day, an impressive $1,400 had been raised.

Part of the money will go towards artwork and wall frames to fill the walls with positive messages like “Hope,” “Strength,” “Believe,” and “Gratitude.” These affirmations, paired with calming paintings of beaches, forests, and soft abstract designs in soothing hues, will offer moments of reflection and peace to everyone who passes by.

Outside, the team is dreaming even bigger. They plan to introduce vibrant floral plants and flowers, along with aromatic herbs like rosemary and mint to delight the senses. If space permits, small trees like Japanese maples or flowering cherry blossoms could soon stand proudly at the entrance, offering shade and beauty.

Most importantly, they want this to be a shared journey. Consumers and staff will be invited to vote on which plants to add and even participate in a joyful “planting day,” turning the project into a true community effort.

“With any remaining funds, we’re hoping to invest in sports and fitness equipment. From basketballs and a hoop to yoga mats and resistance bands, these additions will encourage everyone to get active and look after their physical wellbeing,” says Sumeet.

Thanks to Sumeet’s initiative, and the generosity and spirit of the community, this space is set to become a little brighter, a little greener, and a whole lot more uplifting.”
