National Diabetes Week
This week marks National Diabetes Week, and Northern Health is proud to stand alongside Diabetes Victoria in raising awareness for this year’s important message: Check today for a healthier tomorrow.
Diabetes is the fastest-growing chronic condition in Australia, with 1.5 million people currently registered with the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS).
The condition is linked to a wide range of serious health issues, and its impact is felt across families, communities, and the healthcare system. Early detection and regular health checks are essential in preventing long-term complications.
This year’s campaign focuses on prevention, early diagnosis, and proactive care.
Understanding your risk is a vital first step – tools like the AUSDRISK quiz can help you assess your likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes within the next five years in just a few minutes.
Regular health checks with your GP or medical care team are equally important. Timely diagnosis allows for early intervention, better management, and a reduced risk of serious complications.
For those already living with diabetes, participating in the Annual Cycle of Care helps identify potential issues early, supports ongoing treatment, and improves long-term outcomes.
“Northern Health has the highest incidence in the state of Victoria of people who are admitted to our hospital who have diabetes. Along with Diabetes Victoria, I am encouraging all in our community to schedule a health check with your General Practitioner today, for a healthier tomorrow,” says Dr Suresh Varadarajan, Head of Endocrine Services, Northern Health.
Northern Health encourages all staff and community members to take action – know your risk, prioritise your health checks, and support others to do the same.
Together, we can create healthier futures for our community by starting with a simple check today.
