New online self-referral form for abortion services

The Abortion Service at Broadmeadows Hospital is excited to announce their new, publicly available, webpage on the Northern Health website, complete with an Online Self-Referral Form.

The Abortion Service at Broadmeadows Health Service provides a safe, pro-choice and highly professional service to women and gender-diverse people. The service provides early medical abortions up to 9.0 weeks gestation, and surgical abortions, up to 13.6 weeks gestation.

Referrals into the Abortion Service are easy and convenient. GP referrals are accepted but are not required. Self-referrals can be completed via phone by calling 0499 648 378, or completing the Online self-Referral Form. Internal referrals can be completed by Northern Health staff members via CPF – see the new Abortion Service intranet page for information on eligibility criteria and how to refer.

“The Abortion Service is a midwife-led multi-disciplinary team made up of doctors, midwives and a counsellor. We are proud to provide a safe, high-quality, and accessible service to the community,” said Kate Chaouki, Clinical Midwife Consultant, Clinic Lead.

With around half of all pregnancies being unplanned, the service encourages anyone who is unsure about what to do if they have discovered a pregnancy, to contact 1800 My Options – a free confidential pro-choice information about contraception, pregnancy options and sexual health.

“The new webpage provides essential information about our service, including what we provide, how to get in contact, information about the team, and what they can expect from our service. This valuable information is essential for the community to know what their local service provides, and to reduce stigma,” said Sarah Wotherspoon, Counsellor with the Abortion Service.

Kylie Johnston, Clinical Midwife Specialist, highlights that “our service also provides information about contraception, and sexual and reproductive health screening for patients who access our service.”

The team at the Abortion Service would like to thank the Public Affairs team for their outstanding work on the new website.
