New look. Same trusted care. Welcome to the Virtual Emergency Department (VED)

The Victorian Virtual Emergency Department (VVED) has officially become the Virtual Emergency Department (VED), marking a new chapter for one of Victoria’s most successful digital health services.

While the name and branding have changed, the service remains exactly the same – providing free, 24/7 urgent care via video call with emergency doctors and nurses for non-life-threatening health concerns, anywhere in Victoria.

The refreshed identity, developed in partnership with the Victorian Department of Health, better aligns the Virtual Emergency Department with the state’s urgent care network, alongside Urgent Care Clinics and Nurse-on-Call. It also gives Victorians greater confidence by clearly identifying the service as a Victorian Government-endorsed health service.

Since launching as a Northern Health pilot in 2020, the service has continued to grow from strength to strength. It has now supported more than 940,000 patient presentations, including more than 320,000 presentations in the past financial year alone, helping thousands of Victorians receive timely care without attending a physical Emergency Department.

The service now averages more than 1,000 patients every day, playing an important role in easing pressure on emergency departments across the state while ensuring patients receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

Whether patients access the service themselves or are referred by a healthcare provider, the message remains simple: New look. Same trusted care.

If you, your family or friends need urgent medical care that can’t wait for a GP appointment, but isn’t life-threatening, the Virtual Emergency Department is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

For life-threatening emergencies, always call Triple Zero (000) or attend your nearest Emergency Department.
