Northern Health’s Central Sterilisation Services Department (CSSD) has been recognised by the Sterilising Research and Advisory Council of Australia (SRACA) Victoria, winning a $100 gift voucher and being featured in the organisation’s newsletter after taking part in this year’s International Day of Sterilisation Sciences celebrations.

To mark International Day of Sterilisation Sciences on 10 April 2026, SRACA Victoria invited member organisations to participate in a photo competition showcasing how their teams celebrated the occasion.

The celebration was organised by the CSSD Social Committee, established in 2025 to strengthen team culture and recognise special occasions throughout the year. The committee decorated the department’s tearoom, with staff coming together to enjoy games, refreshments and the opportunity to connect and celebrate their profession. Photos of the event were submitted on behalf of the Northern Health CSSD team.

In May, the team was advised it had been shortlisted for the competition. Then, in July, Northern Health CSSD was announced as one of the winners, receiving a $100 gift voucher and being featured alongside other winning hospitals in the SRACA newsletter.

CSSD Nurse Unit Manager Melanie Almazan said the recognition was a proud moment for the entire team.

“Receiving this recognition was a proud and exciting moment for our team. Every day, our staff work behind the scenes to ensure surgical instruments are safely reprocessed and sterilised, playing a vital role in patient safety.”

“Much of what we do happens out of sight, so having the opportunity to celebrate our profession, connect as a team and receive recognition from our professional organisation was incredibly meaningful. This award reflects the teamwork, dedication and pride our staff bring to supporting safe patient care every day, and we hope it also raises awareness of the essential role CSSD plays in every surgical procedure across Northern Health,” she added.

A member of the CSSD Social Committee said the award recognised much more than a successful competition entry.

“Seeing our team’s enthusiasm and efforts recognised was incredibly rewarding. The award wasn’t just about winning a prize – it reflected the strong sense of teamwork, connection and pride we’ve been building within CSSD. It also highlighted the importance of celebrating our profession and recognising the valuable contribution every team member makes.”

The recognition reflects the strong culture that continues to grow within CSSD, bringing together experienced staff and newer team members who share a commitment to supporting safe, high-quality patient care. While much of the department’s work takes place behind the scenes, the award shines a spotlight on the vital role CSSD plays in every patient’s healthcare journey.
