Northern Health staff lead national laboratory medicine conference

Northern Health staff have played a leading role in delivering one of Australasia’s most significant laboratory medicine events, helping shape discussions on the future of diagnostic testing, laboratory quality and patient care.

The Australasian Association for Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine (AACB) hosted its 63rd Annual Scientific Conference at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre from 14 to 17 September 2026. Under the theme, The Practical Clinical Laboratory, the conference focused on translating scientific advances into real-world improvements in laboratory practice and healthcare outcomes.

The AACB is the peak professional body for clinical biochemistry and laboratory medicine in Australasia. Its annual conference brings together scientists, pathologists, clinicians and industry leaders from across Australia, New Zealand and beyond to share knowledge, explore emerging developments and promote excellence in laboratory medicine.

Northern Health was strongly represented in the conference leadership team. Dr Kay Weng Choy served as Chair of the Scientific Programme Committee, supported by fellow Northern Health staff member John Abcede, who was also a committee member. Working alongside colleagues from across Australia, they helped develop a comprehensive program featuring expert presentations, practical symposia, research showcases and discussions addressing contemporary challenges in laboratory medicine.

Adding to Northern Health’s contribution, Karthik Nediyedath served as Deputy Chair (Co-Chair) of the Early Career Scientist Forum, helping foster professional development and engagement among the next generation of laboratory scientists.

The conference covered a broad range of important topics, including endocrine testing, reference intervals, point-of-care testing, quality assurance, data analytics and laboratory stewardship. Northern Health’s involvement demonstrates the growing reputation and expertise of its pathology workforce. Beyond day-to-day diagnostic services, staff are contributing to national professional education, research and leadership, helping influence the future direction of laboratory medicine across Australasia.

Dr Kay Weng Choy, Chemical Pathologist and Chair of the Scientific Programme Committee, said the conference’s success reflected the dedication and collaboration of a highly committed team.

“Organising a national scientific conference is no small undertaking, and its success is a testament to the dedication of the entire organising committee,” Dr Choy said.

“I am especially proud of the contributions made by my Northern Pathology Victoria colleagues, John Abcede and Karthik Nediyedath.  Although Northern Pathology Victoria is a relatively new pathology service, our involvement demonstrates that we are already making our mark in laboratory medicine, both in Victoria and across Australasia.”
