Peter’s path to connection.
Residents at McLellan House are discovering how technology can support wellbeing, social connection and meaningful engagement through an innovative new addition to their lifestyle program.
The BEAM Interactive Lifestyle System is transforming the way residents participate in recreational activities. Designed specifically for older adults, the technology-enabled system projects interactive games onto floors and tables, encouraging movement, cognitive stimulation and social interaction. With more than 60 games available and difficulty levels that automatically adapt to individual needs, BEAM offers residents a fun and accessible way to stay active and engaged.
For 82-year-old resident Peter, who has called McLellan House home for approximately 15 years, the BEAM system has quickly become a favourite pastime. “I enjoy having other residents join me so we can play together.”
Nurse Unit Manager Williams Akengbowa said the positive response from residents highlights the important role meaningful activities can play in supporting wellbeing. “Residents have provided positive feedback about the BEAM gaming system and have told us that they enjoy the variety of games and the different way it allows them to participate in meaningful and enjoyable activities within McLellan House,” he said.
“The system is easy for residents to engage with, requires minimal staff supervision, and provides opportunities for both individual and group participation.”
McLellan House acquired the BEAM system through the Public Sector Residential Aged Care (PSRAC) Quality Improvement Grant, with strong support from residents and their families. Williams said the technology has become a valuable addition to the home’s lifestyle and recreational programs.
“We will continue to encourage and support residents to use the system as another way of promoting participation, social interaction, enjoyment and meaningful engagement within McLellan House.”
Initiatives such as the BEAM Interactive Lifestyle System demonstrate how innovative approaches can help residents stay connected, active and engaged, supporting both mental health and quality of life.
